We’ve spied Renault’s engineers driving around in a camouflaged prototype of a Captur with an extended twist.

For the most part, it looks just like the regular version of the French firm’s small crossover, but with a longer rear overhang. There is a chance it may also be riding on a slightly stretched wheelbase, though, it’s not clear from these photos.

The only other visible difference with the standard Captur is the five- instead of four-lug wheel pattern, which could be due to the higher load capacity.

Our scoop photographer came in touch with a Renault insider who told him that a “longer and roomier Grand Captur was actually in the pipeline” adding that a facelift is also due in 2017, so in all likelihood, this tester is for both models.

The standard Captur has been a success for Renault selling just shy of 200,000 units in 2014 (including 178,401 Renault-badged and 18,191 Renault-Samsung-badged models), its first full year in the market, making it the brand’s third best-seller behind the Clio (378,526) and Duster (234,883 cars under Renault’s marque) and fifth overall (including Dacia sales).

A Grand Captur variant with extra luggage area and possibly, improved rear-passenger space, should help Renault improve its sales by trying to…capture customers looking at bigger offerings.
