VW Crushes The Opposition In Spanish Rally

A Polo R WRC finishing first at a round of the 2015 World Rally Championship is no news anymore. In fact, it’s the norm.

This was confirmed once again this weekend on the Rally of Spain. The German team was on course for a 1-2-3 finish, which was spoiled at the last moment. Sebastien Ogier was headed for his eighth win of the season, but the three-time world champion made a mistake at the last stage, touched the barrier and retired.

Thus, victory was handed to his team mate Andreas Mikkelsen, who won his first ever round of the WRC ahead of the other VW factory driver, Jari-Matti Latvalla.

“We have waited so long and worked so hard for this moment. When it finally arrived, we could hardly believe it: we have won our first World Championship rally!”, said a delighted Mikkelsen who had waited 64 races to climb to the top spot of the podium.

With both tarmac and gravel stages, this was quite a demanding event. Even so, VW’s cars won 17 out of 23 special stages. Furthermore, no matter what happens next, after clinching the Manufacturers’ title it will also have the first three positions in the Drivers’ championship to itself, for the second year in a row.

Hyundai’s Dani Sordo finished in third place, followed by the two Citroens of Mads Ostberg and Kris Meeke.
