There’s a new Jeep model on the horizon, one that will take over the roles of both the current Compass and Patriot compact crossovers, in the brand’s range. The move is anticipated to save FCA millions of dollars, while also streamlining its offerings for consumers.

Placed between the Renegade and Cherokee, the as-of-yet unnamed CUV is expected to make its motor show appearance as early as next year.

These spy shots confirm that the compact CUV is in a late development stage wearing what looks to be a production body under that pesky camouflage.

In this hidden state, the silhouette loosely resembles a cross between the original Land Rover Freelander (front) and the Range Rover Evoque (rear), but once the wraps come off, we’ll get to see the crossover’s unique styling cues like the pinched beltline and pronounced wheel arch moldings. The new model will ride on a stretched and widened version of FCA’s GM Fiat Small platform architecture that forms the technical base for a number of cars in the group, ranging from the Fiat 500L and 500X, to the Jeep Renegade and Alfa Romeo MiTo. It will offer a more rugged and capable trail-rated Trailhawk version similar to the Renegade, with a longer suspension travel, revised bodywork, disconnecting four-wheel drive and added electronic features such as the Selec-Terrain traction management system.

Engine offerings are believed to include a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged unit with direct injection, possibly available with a six-speed manual and FCA’s nine-speed automatic, with base models to likely to get standard front-wheel drive.
