The diesel versions of the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado and 2016 GMC Canyon may be the pickup trucks you want if fuel efficiency is a major concern.

With an EPA-estimated 31 mpg (7.6L/100km) highway, 22 mpg (10.7L/100km) city and 25 mpg (9.4L/100km) combined, the two-wheel drive editions of the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon offer an estimated maximum driving range of 651 miles (1,048 km) with a 21-gallon (80L) fuel tank.

Four wheel drive versions of the two otherwise identical models return 23 mpg combined, 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

Power comes from a 2.8-liter Duramax turbo-diesel engine, developing 181 HP (184 PS) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque, sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.

The maximum towing capability of the two diesel pickup trucks is 7,700 pounds (3,492 kg) in 2WD form and 7,600 pounds (3,447 kg) for 4WD versions.

The 2016 Chevrolet Colorado Diesel goes on sale this fall in two flavors, LT and Z71 Crew Cab, while the GMC Canyon, in SLE and SLT Crew Cab models. Both are priced $3,730 more than their similarly equipped 3.6-liter V6 counterparts.
