MSO’s Exclusive McLaren 650S Spider ‘Al Sahara 79’ Features Real Gold In Its Paintjob

McLaren unveiled the latest bespoke project of their MSO division aimed for the Middle East market, the 650S Spider ‘Al Sahara 79’ at the Dubai International Motor Show.

The customized 650S Spider is available only for Middle East customers and features a “uniquely formulated paint scheme” which McLaren calls pearlescent white gold and with good reason.

The paint is mixed with real 24 carat gold particles in order to achieve a subtle shimmer, inspired by the golden sands of the Middle Eastern landscape. And if you are wondering what’s that 79 doing in the name of this edition, it’s there because of the gold’s atomic number which is -you guessed it- 79.

The exterior also features a retractable hard top and a set of forged alloy wheels finished in gloss black with the side intakes, front splitter, MSO-branded side blades and rear diffuser made out of carbon fibre of course.

The cabin features a black and Almond White leather upholstery with contrasting stitching, carrying the ‘Al Sahara’ paint scheme inside to the steering wheel, centre console and door panels. All the switchgear and heating vents are finished in a distinctive dark gold.

No changes have been made to the engine of the McLaren 650S Spider ‘Al Sahara 78’ which means that power remains at 641hp and 678Nm (500lb ft) of torque and that zero to 62mph (0-100km/h) still comes in 3 seconds flat, on to a top speed of 204mph (329km/h).

More than 25 per cent of the McLaren models ordered from the region contain a bespoke spec, making the Middle East one of the most popular places for McLaren Special Operations.

“The 650S Spider Al Sahara 79 project offered an exciting opportunity to create a truly bespoke car inspired by the rich history and culture of the Middle Eastern region,” said Paul Mackenzie, McLaren Special Operations Director. “It was fascinating to hear the feedback from McLaren owners, and to then assimilate this into a truly bespoke project that reflected the region’s long history of luxury and craftsmanship – which are the foundations of the MSO brand.”
