BMW is working on a new battery pack for the i3 in order to improve the range of their popular electric model.

The German manufacturer will introduce a new lithium-ion battery with the same capacity as the one used so far, but featuring higher power density for an improved range. Autocar reports that the new battery will allow the i3 to offer more than 124 miles (200km) of range in real-world conditions on a single charge. The current model offers less than 100 miles of range.

BMW was able to develop the new battery by taking advantage of the progress made in battery technology since 2013, when the i3 made its debut.

The new battery will be fitted to both the all-electric and the range-extender i3 models which uses an efficient petrol engine to charge the battery as well. The upgrade will include new software for the battery cooling system and the electric motor as well.

BMW will offer the new battery as a retro-fit option to existing i3 owners as well.
