The US branch of Toyota has set a high goal for the MY2016 RAV4 crossover: beat the Honda CR-V and become the best-seller.

Toyota has been witnessing the fourth-gen RAV4 increasing its sales steadily in the US market, climbing up to the third spot of its segment, right behind the No.2 Ford Escape and the No.1 Honda CR-V.

“Just two years ago we sold less than 200,000 RAV4s” Cooper Ericksen, vice president-vehicle marketing and communications for Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. told WardsAuto and other media during a preview of the new 2016 RAV4. “This year we’re on track to sell over 300,000.”

Ericksen also said that they expect this figure to increase to around 400,000 units, as the company will push for the top spot. Adding a new sportier SE trim to the range, in addition to the two new trims (XLE and Limited) of the hybrid RAV4, will help them achieve their goal, he added, as no other competitor in the mid-sized crossover class has a hybrid model in its range.

The new MY2016 Toyota RAV4 is going to be offered in 176hp 2.5-litre petrol and 194hp Hybrid versions, with the petrol models offered both in 2WD and 4WD guises.
