If you were looking for undeniable proof that a sporty BMW X2 is in the making, here it is, as our spies nabbed the first prototype on the road.

What started out for BMW as a niche sub-segment described as “Sports Activity Coupés” (SAC) with the X6 in 2009, has become an entire family of crossover models that includes the smaller X4 launched in 2014, and in about a year’s time, the pictured X2.

They may differ in size between them, but the formula is the same, as these even number “X” models are sportier looking, but less roomy and practical iterations of their odd number “X” siblings, so the X6 is based on the X5, the X4 on the X3 and the new X2 is built on the foundations of the latest X1, therefore becoming the second BMW crossover based on a front-wheel drive platform architecture.

As pictured here, the X2 looks as if someone dropped the lowered greenhouse of a regular hatchback on top of a wider version of the X1, as it lacks the coupe-like roofline with a heavily sloped rear window of the X4 and X6 models, but we’ll need to see more of the car to form a better opinion on its design.

We anticipate that BMW will borrow the X1’s interior for the X2, with minimal changes to the design and trimmings.

The X1 will be the source of the powertrains, which will initially include a range of turbocharged four-cylinder petrol and diesel mills, possibly topped by an M Performance edition with a 2.0-liter turbo pushing around 300hp and standard all-wheel drive to rival the Mercedes-AMG GLA 45 and Audi RS Q3. Europe and other select regions around the world, will get more fuel efficient three-cylinder units.
