1964 Shelby Competition Cobra Could Sell For $3 Million At January Auction

In terms of iconic cars of the 20th century, there are few that can rival the original Cobra. Originally produced in the United Kingdom by AC Cars, the Cobra has gone on to become recognizable around the world under the Shelby badge.

While there are a multitude of companies producing Cobra replicas, actually purchasing a genuine original isn’t quite as easy nor as affordable. As a matter of fact, one particularly impressive example from 1964 will headline RM Sotheby’s Scottsdale auction, where it is expected to sell for between $2.5 million and $3.3 million.

This Cobra is a rare 427 Competition model, one of just 23 units ever produced. It is chassis CSX 3010 and is powered by a massive V8 delivering 620 hp, a figure that’s still impressive in 2015 – never mind the 1960s…

It was originally delivered new to Don Russell Jr. in South Carolina, who soon decided it was too wild for use on the road. He then sold it to a man from Massachusetts who raced it in a number of events throughout 1967 and 1968. This Cobra went on to compete in the Canadian Endurance Championship and ultimately claimed the title in the Eastern Canadian Endurance Championship.

It’s been with the current owner since 1978 and in the early 1980s, it underwent a complete restoration.
