All-Electric Mercedes-Benz ELC Crossover Could Arrive In 2018

With Audi hard at work on developing its all-electric Q6 e-tron SUV to rival the Tesla Model X, it seems as though Mercedes wants a slice of the pie.

The Germans are said to be planning on launching an entirely new crossover available solely with an electric powertrain.

Autobild reports that the new model will be based around the recently-unveiled GLC but re-badged as the ELC. Beyond its new name, a dramatically overhauled design is to be expected with claims that the roof and windows will be the only parts shared between the GLC and ELC. If that is the case then there’s a good chance Mercedes-Benz will aim at improving the aerodynamic efficiency of the car to ensure it has the longest range possible.

As for power, it is claimed that the Mercedes-Benz ELC will utilize at least two electric motors with a flat battery pack across the floor. All told, such a powertrain could pump out a frankly ridiculous 536 hp all while offering a range of over 248 miles. If these figures are accurate then the ELC certainly has the right ingredients to rival the Q6 e-tron and Model X.

Beyond being the marque’s first all-electric production car, the ELC could be its first to use a wireless charging system. If such a system is available, don’t expect it to be the only option with a quick-charging port likely to be standard as well.
