Audi is remaining committed to its long-term goal of reaching 2 million annual sales by the year 2020, despite the ongoing Volkswagen diesel emissions scandal which has affected over 2 million Audi models.

During an extensive interview with Automotive News Europe, Audi chief executive Rupert Stadler said that the German automaker remains committed to its goal of 2 million sales early by 2020, even though based on current sales reports, that goal seems easily achievable before 2020.

As a matter of fact, the premium automaker managed to sell 1.74 million vehicles worldwide last year and in the first 10 months of 2015, shifted a total of 1.5 million cars. Due to economic challenges in the United States however as well as decreasing demand from China, its execs are still (officially, at least) staying committed to their initial 2020 target.

“We have to look at the global economic scenario, such as what is happening to the interest rates in the US or the “new normal” in China’s growth pace. Right now, we are quite positive, so the 2020 target remains”, said Stadler.

Sales for Audi in the United States are also tracking along nicely with 165,000 sales in January-October 2015 and by 2018, it is hoped that figure will rise to 200,000 vehicles.
