Owners of the “green” German hatchback can relax: this i3 did not suffer from the spontaneous combustion case that affects not a few supercars; its demise was caused by a fire that started in its owner’s garage.

The incident reportedly occurred on 2014, during New Year’s Eve, in Germany, and was attributed to ignited ashes of fireworks that were deposited together in a trash bin.

Flames engulfed the garage and rendered this i3 a write-off after its plastic body panels and CFRP Life Cell melted.

The owner stated that the battery tray and aluminum frame were intact after the fire was put out, and so were strands of carbon fiber, but the resin that holds the lightweight material together was still visible on the garage floor even after the debris were removed.

The fire destroyed a second car, too: a 328i that was parked next to it. Two Bimmers destroyed; what a great way to start the new year…
