Of course, we’re not talking about any Carrera-branded Porsche, but the classic 2.7-litre Rennsport.

Thanks to the expertise and knowledge invested in its RS models, Porsche created a cult around the fabled race-inspired automobiles, and the first model to bear the now iconic nomenclature clearly has something special to it. So special, in fact, that its price has ascended to the stratosphere, with this particular orange-y example being our case in point

Of course, as you’d expect most of the models’ pedigree comes from motorsport, as the Carrera 2.7 RS was developed in the wake of the hugely successful Le Mans-winning Type 917 prototype program of the late 1960’s, early 1970’s, when Porsche needed another racing venue to further bolster its competition image. When the FIA created a new series for production based sports cars, Porsche pounced on the opportunity and came up with the now iconic 2.7 Carrera.

Using the 911s as a starting point, the Competition Department created two different versions of the Carrera – the sport model and the touring model – one stripped out of its interior, intended for competition use, while the other offered some lightweight feature but didn’t renounced completely at some its creature comforts.

Of course, when the prototype was first shown to the company director, Porsche’s sales department declared, in the textbook cliché fashion, that it could never sell 500 examples of the homologation special. Good thing they had a change of heart, as the model immediately registered positive feedback from potential customers after its launch.

This particular Carrera took a little over four years to find and restore, carrying its original, number-matching drivetrain. RM Sotheby – the auction house responsible for the car’s “for sale” sign – says that the RS went through a complete, meticulous disassembly, with outsourcing original parts from all over the world. Slated to go under the hammer at the “Driven by Disruption even in new York, the car is currently evaluated between $900,000 and $1,000,000.
