Jeep has announced that it is recalling certain models of the 2015-2016 Cherokee globally due to a potential fire hazard.

The recall affects 55,687 units built produced between February 18, 2015 and September 10, 2015 that were installed with the optional power liftgate.

On those vehicles, there is a risk of a leak that would allow water to reach the control module for the liftgate. If this were to happen, then it would short circuit the system and potentially lead to a fire.

Of the 55,687 Cherokee models being recalled, 32,784 were sold in the United States, 10,138 in Canada, 924 in Mexico and the remaining 11,841 outside the NAFTA region.

To resolve the issue, Jeep dealerships will replace any parts damaged by water and if necessary, fit a better moisture shield into the liftgate.
