The third model in Lamborghini’s lineup will be the Urus SUV, as the model will follow the current Huracan and Aventador supercars.

The Italian firm’s SUV is believed to pack a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine under its hood, which should allow it to reach 100km/h (62mph), from a standstill, in less than 4 seconds, topping the Bentley Bentayga (4.1sec), the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S (4.1sec) and the BMW X6 M (4.2sec), which are the fastest vehicles in the segment.

According to Motoring, which is quoting the raging bull’s Research and Development chief, Maurizio Reggiani, the new turbocharged V8 engine will probably be sourced from Audi, but a previous report indicates that it will be exclusively tuned for the upcoming Italian SUV.

Reggiani suggested that the Urus might also gain a second engine choice, in the shape of a V6 plug-in hybrid, while also claiming that the Urus will be the lightest and the most aerodynamic model in the segment. “It will have no rivals… it will create a new segment“, said the R&D chief.

The report indicates that the LM002’s successor will use the aluminum-steel MLB 2 platform, from the new Q7 generation and Bentayga, which could be modified using carbon fiber components. These changes, along with light body panels, should keep its total weight at less than 2.3tonnes of its main competitors.

Several prototypes of the Urus SUV were reportedly thrashed on the UAE’s sand dunes, in order to make sure that the model has what it needs to withstand extreme heat and, obviously, sand, since a lot of units are expected to be sold in the Middle East.

Reggiani also confirmed what Winkelmann said recently, that the new Lambo SUV will raise the annual production volume to approximately 6,000 units and, in order to cope with the extra numbers, the Sant’Agata Bolognese facility is expected to create around 500 new jobs.

The same reports says that the final production version of the Lamborghini Urus SUV will be unveiled at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.
