Ahead of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class debut at the Detroit Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz has just released a new video focusing solely on its development.
The Stuttgart-based automaker says it has been developing its tech for the past two years. In that time, it has produced an incredible 1,200 prototypes and driven over 12 million kilometres in some of the world’s toughest conditions, from sub-zero temperatures in the snow through to the world’s hottest deserts.
In testing the car, Mercedes-Benz has also had its prototypes conduct over 10,000 autonomous braking procedures and 5,000 automated lane changes. When all of this development comes together on January 11, the new E-Class has the potential to completely redefine the premium saloon market from both a luxury and technology standpoint.
Recently, a number of pictures and details have been released about the vehicle’s interior, which adopts obvious design inspiration from both the C-Class and S-Class.
One of the most important features will be the two optional 12.3-inch displays, one replacing the analog instrument cluster and the other acting as the display for the infotainment system. If customers don’t tick that box, they’ll get analog dials and a smaller 8.4-inch central display.
As for the powertrains, it has been confirmed that the new E-Class will introduce a range of inline six-cylinder engines along with a new four-cylinder diesel and a hybrid variant.
