Wolfsburg confirmed the development of the track-focused Golf GTI Clubsport S, complete with 305hp and a setup tailored for tackling the Nurburgring.

The hottest FWD version of the Golf GTI will debut at this year’s Wörthersee Meet on May 4, which marks the 40th birthday of VW’s iconic hot hatch.

Apart from the increased firepower and the track-focused setup, it is believed that VW has also applied motorsport-inspired weight-saving measures, including the removal of the rear seats and lots of the sound deadening material.

With the normal Clubsport tipping the scales at 1,375 kg, it’s not unreasonable to expect a weight figure under the 1,300kg mark for the S.

An earlier report said that Volkswagen engineers were inspired from the Porsche 911 GT3 when developing this project. All we are going to say is that this new Golf GTI sounds a lot like VW’s take on the much-loved Renault Megane RS Trophy.

Production is said to be limited to around 5,000 units, with the price expected to be north of the Golf R, currently the most potent model of the range.
