The premium sports sedan segment got a bit more interesting recently as the Jaguar XE joined a group of cars sharing certain qualities.

Whether it’s a Mercedes, a BMW or an Audi, you know you’ll have a prestige badge and a very capable saloon that can just about do it all. Is the Jaguar XE good enough to go toe to toe with the Germans? Pretty much all reviews so far seem to suggest that yes, it is. And this one is no different.

Mat Watson goes on record here admitting that he is a bit subjective when it comes to the Jaguar (Brits staying together and all that), but he also does a good job pointing out which cars are better at certain things and which aren’t.

While his opinion that the XE is the best-looking car here is, of course, debatable, the more practical tests are quite informative – such as the rear headroom tests for two & three passengers, the User Interface comparison and the obvious boot space test that some, more family oriented customers would probably want to take to heart.

Younger drivers might favor looks and performance over everything else, in which case results might actually resemble those we got in this poll where we asked our readers to vote for their favorite compact exec car – a list that also included the Lexus IS, Infiniti Q50 and Cadillac ATS. The Mercedes C-Class won that poll, followed closely by the Jaguar XE, while the 3-Series came in a distant third.

Nevertheless, this review is another thing altogether. Let’s see which gets top honors.
