Jeep’s profitability is an inviting target for its competitors, as GMC reportedly wants to capitalize on the SUV market as well.

Automotive News reports that brand’s chief, Duncan Aldred, planned to grow the General Motors truck brand’s market share by two-thirds over a decade, to 5 percent from about 3 percent.

However, its US market hasn’t increased despite the high demand for pickups, SUVs and crossovers.

That’s why the American company weighs in the possibility to venture into Jeep’s terrain, as unnamed industry sources believe it plans a body-on-frame off-roader that will be aimed directly at the about the Wrangler.

Based on the same platform as the as the GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado pickup trucks, it is allegedly in the early stages of development as it doesn’t appear to have been sourced to suppliers yet. In fact, its arrival isn’t expected until 2020 or later, marking a new direction for the company.

With rumors saying Ford is reviving the body-on-frame Bronco SUV for the very same reasons, it looks like the upcoming Wrangler’s plate will be full.
