When Mercedes-AMG unveiled the GT R at last month’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, it said that it wouldn’t limit production of the most-potent of GT variants. Fast forward three weeks and it seems like it’s changed its tune.

Autocar reports that while speaking with executives at the company, the firm hinted that it may cap production at the 2,000 mark, something that will certainly please buyers who got their orders in nice and early.

Beyond protecting the car’s value and desirability, the choice to limit production should ensure that only the keenest of enthusiasts and collectors will get their hands on one.

Interestingly, the German firm believes that almost all GT Rs will spend most their life on the racetrack. That’s appropriate given the company dubbed the car the ‘Beast of the Green Hell‘ in the lead up to its launch.

If Mercedes-AMG does decide to limit production, it won’t be the first time a firm has done a backflip and restricted production on a model which was originally announced as not being limited. For example, Porsche released the popular Cayman GT4 without any hint of it being limited but according to our sources, production will cease after fewer than 2,500 units are built.
