The SRT Hellcat dominance in the muscle car segment could might come to an end, as Ford is reportedly readying the most extreme version of the Mustang yet.

Picking up from the GT350 and GT350R, the upcoming model could wear the Shelby GT500 designation or revive the Mach 1 name, according to MotorAuthority, which claims to have caught a prototype in the wild.

Expected for the 2018 model year, which means that it could be unveiled by the end of 2016 or early 2017, the super ‘Stang will target the extremely popular Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, which deliver 650 HP and 707 HP respectively.

The Super Stang could be powered by a twin-turbo version of the GT350’s 5.2-liter V8. It’s also possible that the new 10-speed automatic transmission, developed with General Motors, which is already equipping the ZL1 and had the company state that it is quicker even than Porsche’s PDK, might be offered.
