A Wall Street Journal report asserts that investigators from the U.S. Department of Justice have uncovered evidence of criminal wrongdoing in VW’s diesel emissions scandal, potentially opening a Pandora’s box of additional fines.

The German automaker is already spending almost $15 billion in a civil settlement with the U.S. government and if federal prosecutors slap VW with criminal charges, this amount will get much bigger.

It is claimed that the Department of Justice is still deciding which charges it will pursue against Volkswagen and some of the key employees involved in the scandal. If they decide to prosecute individual employees, many of which live in Germany, they should ask for them to be extradited to the States.

In the interim, VW is continuing to recall millions of vehicles worldwide.
