Mercedes continues the development of the next-gen GLE SUV model, with our spies spotting another test car on public roads.

While the current GLE model is just a revised version of the ML-Class, the new one will be based on the company’s new Modular High Architecture (MHA) which will bring along all the goodies first seen on the E-Class as well as reduced weight.

The final design of the new Mercedes GLE is expected to be slightly more dynamic, featuring a more raked rear screen, wider fenders and an overall cleaner shape than today’s model. The interior will be roomier and the dashboard will be inspired by Mercedes’ latest offerings, meaning a pair of big digital displays for the instrument cluster and the infotainment system matched with a selection of expensive trim materials.

The engine range will be comprised from turbocharged four- and six-cylinder units, both diesel and petrol, that together with the smaller weight will offer better performance and fuel economy. A plug-in hybrid version will follow shortly after the GLE’s debut while the range-topping AMG version will be powered by the same twin-turbo V8 which powers the also upcoming E63 AMG.

The all-new Mercedes GLE is expected to arrive in 2018, with a new GLE Coupe model set to follow shortly after.
