Ahead of its world debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2017, a new clip previewing the latest-generation 5-Series has been released.

Focusing on the vehicle’s advanced self-driving system, it’s revealed that the new 5-Series has borrowed the Steering and Lane Control Assistant of its larger and more expensive sibling, the 7-Series.

This system works in a similar way to Tesla Autopilot and allows for hands-off and feet-free driving thanks to the active cruise control, automated steering and stop & go function. While it isn’t yet known at what speeds the system will be available at, the 7-Series has the ability to use its self-driving system at speeds of up to 210 km/h (130 mph).

Also included in the latest-generation 5-Series is the Crossroads Warning system. As the name suggests, this piece of technology is able to detect a vehicle about to pull out from a side street and into its path. When the vehicle does pull out, the 5-Series will be able to automatically precondition the brakes and if needed, provide assistance braking to the driver.

While not mentioned in this video, there’s a good chance the 5-Series will also receive the Remote Parking system of the 7-Series. Also provided on the latest-generation E-Class, the system allows the driver to park the vehicle directly from the key fob, rather than actually being behind the wheel.

Alongside its autonomous driving technologies, it’s been confirmed that the new 5-Series will be underpinnned by the CLAR platform, allowing it to shed up to 100 kg in weight.
