Volkswagen is examining its recovery strategy in the United States and, to that end, could add a selection of new models to its local line-up.

During discussions with Automotive News at the Paris Auto Show, the firm’s brand chairman Herbert Diess confirmed that VW will decide on whether or not to expand its car and light-truck range in the U.S. early next year.

If VW does indeed launch new models in the U.S., they’re likely to take the form of additional SUV and crossover models, rather than sedans. Diess said this is because there is greater growth potential in such vehicles and that a selection of rival manufacturers already offer more than a single SUV/crossover in a segment.

One new VW model already confirmed for a launch in the United States is the Teramont. As the company’s new mid-size SUV, it will bring with it a selection of efficient engines and seating for seven. Soon after it arrives, the updated Tiguan will arrive on U.S. shores.

According to Diess, “We think we need more product cadence still to really conquer the Americas and I hope after agreeing on the base business plan we can decide on more products. We think we are right with the two new SUVs to come, and we still have a few more typically-American cars in my mind to really strike back in America.”
