Poised to take on the upcoming BMW M5, Mercedes-Benz’s new super sedan, the AMG E63, looks just about ready to hit the showroom floor.

The latest prototypes captured out in the open have reduced their camouflage to a minimum, revealing their meaner silhouette with broader hips, which will put some distance with the regular new-gen E-Class sedans that are already available for order.

AMG’s high-po sedan uses the company’s familiar 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, tuned to deliver 563 horsepower in base form and up to 604 horsepower in the more potent ‘S’ grade.

While some reports say that for the latest iteration, the brand’s engineers have decided to drop the standard rear-wheel drive layout altogether in favor of an AWD system, Mercedes could offer a rear-wheel drive alternative in some markets.

Either way, if you’re somehow concerned that you won’t be able to slide that rear end on the 4MATIC model, then learn that Merc’ has designed a special drift mode with the ability to send up to 100 per cent of the power to the rear wheels
