Even thought it’s almost been two years since Ford revealed the third-generation GT in Detroit, the latest and greatest American supercar has still yet to hit the production and continues to test on local streets.

Most recently, three undisguised prototypes were scooped out and about on the roads of Colorado in tests likely designed to validate the vehicle’s everyday drive-ability and to ensure it’s not just a monster on the racetrack but also capable of coping with more mundane driving.

As Ford revealed the design of the new GT so long ago, it hasn’t had to adorn any of its test mules with camouflage, instead fitting them with unpainted but near production-spec bodywork. The most obvious differences between the vehicle’s pictured and those that will be delivered to customers are the taillights and exhaust pipes.

Curiously, one of the prototypes has been fitted with a set of headlights with an inner bulb design dramatically different to the production-bound model. The lights of the lighter-colored prototype are different again and are lacking the LED elements which the completed units will include.

Given the massive demand and huge expectations for the new GT, it’s little wonder why Ford is pacing itself with the vehicle’s development. However, as production will kick off next year, we do expect to see and hear more about the finished product in the coming months, including just how much power its twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 can muster up.

Thanks to Brett Borgard for the spy shots!
