Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Uses Nitrous-Oxide To Set Land Speed Record [w/Video]

This race-prepped Hyundai Ioniq set an FIA-approved production-based hybrid vehicle land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats, with speeds peaking at over 160 mph (257 km/h).

The record number however was 157.825 mph, or 253.994 km/h, and was achieved thanks to the car’s single-stage nitrous injection system and special aerodynamics upgrades.

“We couldn’t be more proud in setting the FIA hybrid-category record with our new Ioniq hybrid,” said Hyundai Motor America exec Mike O’Brien. “Our engineering team really pushed the limits to set this new segment benchmark while demonstrating the impressive durability of the entire Ioniq vehicle platform. We expect this will be the first of many accolades for Ioniq.”

Further powertrain modifications included the low-restriction intake and exhaust system with retained catalyst, the re-calibrated engine, transmission and hybrid ECU, having the air conditioning and ancillary accessories removed and of course the previously mentioned cockpit-controlled Nitrous Express single-stage direct-port nitrous injection with a stand-alone fuel system.

In terms of aero, Hyundai engineers worked on the front grille, underbody and even removed some interior components in order to make the car lighter. The suspension was also optimized, and lightweight aero wheels and wheel covers were added.

As for safety, the car featured a fully-integrated high-strength safety cage structure, a Sparco 6-point safety harness system, a racing seat, on-board fire suppression, battery disconnects and a parachute.
