Opel is gearing up for a line-up overhaul, with seven new models in the pipeline, one of them being the Crossland X.

Like the Mokka, the new model will feature the “X”-suffix, meaning it will be a new addition to the German car maker’s crossover (CUV) agenda. Slated to debut at the beginning of 2017, the Crossland X will continue the trend towards sporty and spacious crossovers, as a bigger alternative to the best-selling Mokka – as Opel puts it.

According to AutoNews, Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann said that the Crossland X will sport design elements similar to the Adam lifestyle mini model, and it will share its platform with the next-gen Peugeot 2008 and Citroen C3 Picasso. Furthermore, from now on, the letter “X” will help distinguish Opel’s crossover utility vehicles’ from conventional models:

“We wanted the name to convey a more adventurous, sportier mind set,” Neumann said.

Opel will also debut a new compact crossover at the Frankfurt Auto Show next year. It will be sold along the Zafira, and built in collaboration with PSA, as the “sister model” to the Peugeot 3008. So, expect something similar to the latter, only with Opel badges.

The upcoming Insignia will be part of the offensive as well, along with its three Grand Sport, Sports Tourer, and Country Tourer body variants (sedan, estate, and cross-country). The Grand Sport is expected to make an appearance at the Geneva Motor Show, in March, while the other two in the second half of 2017.

The Ampera-e battery-powered car and a new Vivaro will complete the line-up.
