We understand that taking a regular car and turning it into a supercar killer is something a lot of petrolheads like. But sometimes, pouring a ton of money into a project car isn’t the best of ideas.

This Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS that stars in RegularCars’ latest video is a perfect example of when a project goes too far. The owner set out on a quest to get an engine out of a STI to make 400 horsepower and ended up blowing numerous motors. He then turned to the venerable, turbocharged 2JZ engine from the Toyota Supra and converted the Impreza to be rear-wheel drive only.

Somewhere down the line, he wanted more, eventually settling for 655hp. The issue, though, is that the tires are way too thin. And when you combine that with a short wheelbase, it’s a recipe for disaster. The car, apparently, just didn’t want to do anything. It didn’t want to go in a straight line, it couldn’t put its power down, and it couldn’t even stay put together, as the trim piece holding the nonworking gauges kept falling out.

Still, completing an engine swap and getting a car to make 655hp is quite a feat. But there are many other vehicles we would’ve purchased with the $150,000 that went into the car. To each his own, though – plus, this owner can brag about creating an Impreza with the same amount of power as a Chevrolet Corvette Z06.
