Up until recently, there have been some talks about a possible ‘S’ version of the new generation Mercedes-AMG A45. And it appears that we have official confirmation that such a model is indeed coming.

According to a German insurance company called HUK24, the Mercedes-AMG A45 S 4Matic will arrive with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, making 421 PS (415 hp / 310 kW).

If the number is correct, then the four-pot is actually 21 PS (21 hp / 16 kW) more powerful than Audi’s 2.5-liter turbo-five, used in the RS3 Sportback.

The same website reveals the alleged official output of the new Mercedes-AMG A45 as well: 387 PS (382 hp / 285 kW), from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

That’s a modest 6 PS (6 hp / 4 kW) upgrade over the outgoing model, and definitely contradicts Tobias Moers’ statement that the new A45 will benefit from in excess of 400 horses. Nonetheless, the AMG boss could have referred to the A45 S version.

Performance wise, the current Mercedes-AMG A45 has an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph), and a claimed 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint time of 4.2 seconds. So, we expect the new models to improve the acceleration time, and probably lift the top speed to 270 km/h (168 mph) in the case of the ‘S’ derivative.

Aside from their impressive power outputs, the new Mercedes-AMG A45 and A45 S will also get a drift mode. Ultimately, the German automaker will shed more light on the case probably this spring, with some believing the cars will debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show in March.
