With only a few weeks left before the 2014 SEMA Show kicks off in Las Vegas, Chevrolet is rolling out another group of tuned cars that include the SS Sport, Sonic, Impala and Cruze.
Corvette and Camaro fans need not worry, as this third release from Chevrolet after the Colorado Sport and Silverado Toughnology Concept focuses exclusively on sedans and hatchbacks. The firm's coupe and convertible studies will follow later on.
The common denominator here is that all featured accessories were designed to personalize the cars while maintaining their refinement and ride characteristics, with some of these parts already available through dealers and others currently being evaluated for production.
In the official release below, you'll find full details on the components used by GM on the Chevy project cars.
SS Sport concept
Inspired by Chevrolet’s motorsports heritage and its Australian lineage, the SS Sport concept gives the V-8-powered sports sedan a makeover that reflects its performance capability.
Unique features include:
- Enhanced Some Like It Red Hot exterior with body-color door handles and mirrors
- Chevrolet Accessories grille kit, fog lamp bezels, side fender vents and rear spoiler
- Chevrolet Accessories stripes for the hood and deck lid
- Chevrolet Accessories high-gloss black 20-inch wheels – 20 x 8.5-inch in front and 20 x 9-inch in the rear
- Chevrolet Accessories wheel caps with the Holden logo
- Chevrolet Accessories sport pedal kit and cargo net
- Chevrolet Accessories floor mats and cargo tray with the Holden logo.
Power for the Chevrolet SS comes from the LS3 V-8, delivering an SAE-certified 415 horsepower (310 kW) and 415 lb-ft of torque (563 Nm). For 2015, it is available with a new six-speed manual transmission, along with a six-speed, paddle-shift automatic.
Additionally, the 2015 SS receives standard Magnetic Ride Control – the world’s fastest-reacting damping system – which provides more precise body motion control that correlates with a more responsive, more refined ride. Also new are Brembo rear brakes that complement the Brembo front brakes that have always been part of the SS’s equipment.
Sonic Performance concept
This performance-oriented Sonic hatchback concept draws on the legacy of Chevrolet’s high-performance vehicles reimagined for a new generation of enthusiasts. The Sonic Performance concept features engine performance, suspension/brakes and appearance upgrades designed to be installed by Chevrolet dealers for quicker and easier personalization.
The Performance concept package includes:
- A Chevrolet Performance Stage Kit, cold-air induction and a high-flow exhaust system allowing the 1.4L turbo engine to produce more power for a more exciting driving experience
- A track-tuned suspension system developed by Chevrolet Performance. The suspension kit lowers the ride height for a sportier stance
- Synergy Green exterior color accented with white, offset stripe package
- Chevrolet Accessories white headlamp rings, tail lamp rings, grille surround, mirror covers and rear spoiler
- Concept ground effects package
- Chevrolet Accessories 17-inch aluminum wheels in white
- Chevrolet Accessories carpeted floor mats, door sills and sport pedals.
The Sonic Performance concept features an advanced safety package including forward collision alert and lane departure warning – crash-avoidance technologies typically found on cars costing more – as well as a rear vision camera. It also features 10 standard air bags and Bluetooth phone connectivity – just like every production Sonic in the 2015 lineup.
Sonic Accessories concept
Built to highlight the personalization possibilities, Sonic Accessories concept allows mixing and matching of the latest accessories for unique treatments.
Sonic Accessories concept highlights include:
- Summit White exterior color with an offset matte black stripe
- Chevrolet Accessories white headlamp rings and tail lamp rings
- Chevrolet Accessories black grille surround, mirror covers and rear spoiler
- Chevrolet Accessories black 17-inch aluminum wheels
- Chevrolet Performance suspension kit with lowered ride height
- Chevrolet Accessories carpeted floor mats, door sills and sport pedals.
The Sonic Accessories concepts also packs a Kicker subwoofer and amplifier to complement its street-smart style with the appropriate decibels.
Under the hood is the Ecotec 1.4L turbo rated at 138 horsepower (103kW) and 148 lb-ft of torque (200 Nm) of torque between 1,850 and 4,900 rpm. The wide rpm range for the maximum torque – a specific trait of turbocharged engines – helps the engine deliver a better driving experience and performance.
Impala Blackout concept
Redesigned a year ago, the 2015 Chevrolet Impala builds on the attributes that made it one of the most acclaimed new cars of 2014 – including being named the Cars.com Best Car of 2014 and one of Kelley Blue Book’s 12 Best Family Cars for 2014.
The Impala Blackout concept builds on the car’s aggressive, acclaimed styling with blacked-out cues that lend it a sinister attitude – all accomplished with paint and accessories available from Chevrolet. The simple-yet-effective formula includes: Chevrolet Accessories black grille surround, rear spoiler, painted mirror caps and 19-inch aluminum wheels.
The all-black, leather-trimmed interior features custom trim plates with a wire mesh pattern, along with Chevrolet Accessories stainless steel sills – with the Impala logo – and a sport pedal kit. The Impala Blackout also rocks with the production model’s available 11-speaker Bose® Centerpoint® Surround Sound System, which connects to the Chevrolet MyLink system via an eight-inch-diagonal color touch screen.
The Impala’s available 3.6L V-6 engine, rated at 305 horsepower (227 kW) and 264 lb-ft of torque (358 Nm), powers the Blackout concept. It is the segment’s most powerful naturally aspirated V-6 engine.
Cruze RS Plus concept
Cruze is the cornerstone of Chevrolet’s North American small-car lineup, which is attracting a greater share of the market and more young, first-time customers visiting Chevy showrooms. It is also Chevrolet’s best-selling car around the world, with more than 3 million units sold globally since its launch in mid-2010.
The 2015 Chevrolet Cruze in North America receives revised exterior styling, enhanced interior convenience and greater connectivity – including new Text Message Alerts, Apple Siri integration and OnStar 4G LTE with available built-in Wi-Fi hotspot.
An available RS package includes unique fascias, rocker moldings, rear spoiler and fog lamps, while an uplevel instrument cluster includes chrome accent rings in place of the standard silver finish, and opaque cluster bezels that allow the cluster’s ice blue backlighting to shine through for a sporty nighttime appearance.
The Cruze RS Plus concept accentuates the distinctive, upscale styling cues of the 2015 Cruze RS with a custom Wildfire Metallic exterior, along with unique lower body moldings and a custom rear spoiler. A twin-stripe package in matte black is available from Chevrolet Accessories.
Inside, the Jet Black interior shines brighter with a Chevrolet Accessories ambient lighting kit and illuminated door sills. It also features a sport pedal kit and a Kicker subwoofer and amplifier kit.
Under the hood, the concept’s aggressive styling is matched with a performance-enhancing stage kit from Chevrolet Performance, as well as a concept fresh-air intake system for the 1.4L turbo engine.
Opel is reacting to the Russian market’s difficult environment by cutting one shift at its St. Petersburg plant and by naming Susanna Webber as the CEO of its Russian operations.
As you probably know, the Chevrolet Cruze has already received a second-generation model in China, where it is built locally by the Shanghai GM joint venture. Following the car’s debut at the Beijing Auto Show in April, where only the exterior was showcased, GM has now released the first interior photos.
In spending too much time and paying too much attention to find any changes on the 2015 Cadillac ATS prototypes spied by Carscoops reader Patrick Harmon at a hotel near the Denver International Airport, I completely missed the gem hiding in plain sight right next to one of the coupes: an undisguised 2016 Chevrolet Cruze!
At last month's Beijing Auto Show, we took our first official look at the next generation Chevrolet Cruze, albeit in slightly altered Chinese-specification (that's the one pictured here), and today, we learn that GM will invest $50 million for the creation of a new trim shop and to upgrade the Press Room at the Lordstown Complex in Ohio in preparation for the North American version of the car.
The big news for Shanghai GM, General Motors' joint-venture with China's SAIC Motors, at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show that just kicked off today, is the world premiere of the new generation Chevrolet Cruze.
In a few hours from now, Chevrolet will debut the updated North American version of its Cruze sedan at the New York Auto Show. A few thousand miles across the North Pacific Ocean, Chevy is preparing to do the same to the Chinese market-specification Cruze, albeit with a different makeover (not to be confused with the next-gen model).
GM's Chevrolet Cruze sedan has received one final round of cosmetic and tech updates before it gives way to an all-new generation model in North America within the next 18-24 months. The facelifted 2015 Cruze will debut at the New York International Auto Show on April 16.
We just received word that General Motors plans to host three world premieres at the forthcoming New York Auto Show on April 16, including a brand new variant of the Corvette C7 (not shown in these photos), "an important new addition" to the brand's small vehicle lineup and an updated/refreshed (these were the precise words used) version of the Cruze.
Following the stop-sale announcement issued last week, GM announced a recall for certain 2013 and 2014 Chevrolet Cruze models for possible axle fractures. On the approximately 172,000 models involved in the recall, all equipped with the 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, the right front axle half shaft can fracture without warning during normal driving.
General Motors announced on Friday that it had instructed its dealers to stop selling certain Chevrolet Cruze compact cars for an undisclosed issue. The affected cars are 2013 and 2014 Cruze models equipped with a 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine.
With GM's global team of engineers having one more additional year in their disposal for the development of the next-gen Chevrolet Cruze after the automaker reportedly pushed back its launch to late 2015 instead of this fall, prototypes of the car continue to be covered.
Chevrolet plans to display a little bit of everything at this year's edition of the SEMA Show held in Las Vegas from November 5 to 8, and even though in this latest release there's no mention of the facelifted Camaro and the brand new Corvette, we're pretty certain that the bow tie brand will bring several customized samples of its halo sports cars to The Strip.
If we had to use one word to describe the next generation of the Chevrolet Cruze based on what we know and have seen up until now, we would go for more 'character' – okay, that's two words, but you get what we mean.
We already established this about the compact model's sharper exterior through spy shots and from Carscoops' rendering of what we think the final product will look like, and now we can say something along the same lines about the interior, thanks to these revealing scoops.
The main incentive towards buying a diesel-burning car is to reap the efficiency benefits it brings along (not this one, though). Moreover, there’s the advantage of excellent low- and mid-range pulling power, and the newfound silent running characteristics of the latest-generation units, two of which are found under the bonnets of the Chevy Cruze 2.0TD and Volkswagen Jetta TDI.
The Chevrolet Cruze is a distinctly average car – it can’t be called bad in any area, but nor does it really excel at anything… Also, with some of the petrol engines it comes with in Europe, particularly the 1.8-liter unit which I had a chance to drive, it should be called the “Thrash”, as it would be far more suitable.
However, now US buyers can buy a Cruze worthy of its name, one equipped with a modern two-liter diesel engine which, according to Consumer Reports, is an excellent highway companion, but less pleasant in town.
