The SS is the first Chevrolet-badged V8 sedan launched in the last 17 years, yet it seems GM is not all that content with it and will not give it a follow-up model.
It was confirmed to Motoring, on the sidelines of the SEMA show in Las Vegas, when they asked for information on a possible next rear-driven Holden Commodore (now a rebadged SS).
With only a few weeks left before the 2014 SEMA Show kicks off in Las Vegas, Chevrolet is rolling out another group of tuned cars that include the SS Sport, Sonic, Impala and Cruze.
Corvette and Camaro fans need not worry, as this third release from Chevrolet after the Colorado Sport and Silverado Toughnology Concept focuses exclusively on sedans and hatchbacks. The firm's coupe and convertible studies will follow later on.
The common denominator here is that all featured accessories were designed to personalize the cars while maintaining their refinement and ride characteristics, with some of these parts already available through dealers and others currently being evaluated for production.
In the official release below, you'll find full details on the components used by GM on the Chevy project cars.
SS Sport concept
Inspired by Chevrolet’s motorsports heritage and its Australian lineage, the SS Sport concept gives the V-8-powered sports sedan a makeover that reflects its performance capability.
Unique features include:
- Enhanced Some Like It Red Hot exterior with body-color door handles and mirrors
- Chevrolet Accessories grille kit, fog lamp bezels, side fender vents and rear spoiler
- Chevrolet Accessories stripes for the hood and deck lid
- Chevrolet Accessories high-gloss black 20-inch wheels – 20 x 8.5-inch in front and 20 x 9-inch in the rear
- Chevrolet Accessories wheel caps with the Holden logo
- Chevrolet Accessories sport pedal kit and cargo net
- Chevrolet Accessories floor mats and cargo tray with the Holden logo.
Power for the Chevrolet SS comes from the LS3 V-8, delivering an SAE-certified 415 horsepower (310 kW) and 415 lb-ft of torque (563 Nm). For 2015, it is available with a new six-speed manual transmission, along with a six-speed, paddle-shift automatic.
Additionally, the 2015 SS receives standard Magnetic Ride Control – the world’s fastest-reacting damping system – which provides more precise body motion control that correlates with a more responsive, more refined ride. Also new are Brembo rear brakes that complement the Brembo front brakes that have always been part of the SS’s equipment.
Sonic Performance concept
This performance-oriented Sonic hatchback concept draws on the legacy of Chevrolet’s high-performance vehicles reimagined for a new generation of enthusiasts. The Sonic Performance concept features engine performance, suspension/brakes and appearance upgrades designed to be installed by Chevrolet dealers for quicker and easier personalization.
The Performance concept package includes:
- A Chevrolet Performance Stage Kit, cold-air induction and a high-flow exhaust system allowing the 1.4L turbo engine to produce more power for a more exciting driving experience
- A track-tuned suspension system developed by Chevrolet Performance. The suspension kit lowers the ride height for a sportier stance
- Synergy Green exterior color accented with white, offset stripe package
- Chevrolet Accessories white headlamp rings, tail lamp rings, grille surround, mirror covers and rear spoiler
- Concept ground effects package
- Chevrolet Accessories 17-inch aluminum wheels in white
- Chevrolet Accessories carpeted floor mats, door sills and sport pedals.
The Sonic Performance concept features an advanced safety package including forward collision alert and lane departure warning – crash-avoidance technologies typically found on cars costing more – as well as a rear vision camera. It also features 10 standard air bags and Bluetooth phone connectivity – just like every production Sonic in the 2015 lineup.
Sonic Accessories concept
Built to highlight the personalization possibilities, Sonic Accessories concept allows mixing and matching of the latest accessories for unique treatments.
Sonic Accessories concept highlights include:
- Summit White exterior color with an offset matte black stripe
- Chevrolet Accessories white headlamp rings and tail lamp rings
- Chevrolet Accessories black grille surround, mirror covers and rear spoiler
- Chevrolet Accessories black 17-inch aluminum wheels
- Chevrolet Performance suspension kit with lowered ride height
- Chevrolet Accessories carpeted floor mats, door sills and sport pedals.
The Sonic Accessories concepts also packs a Kicker subwoofer and amplifier to complement its street-smart style with the appropriate decibels.
Under the hood is the Ecotec 1.4L turbo rated at 138 horsepower (103kW) and 148 lb-ft of torque (200 Nm) of torque between 1,850 and 4,900 rpm. The wide rpm range for the maximum torque – a specific trait of turbocharged engines – helps the engine deliver a better driving experience and performance.
Impala Blackout concept
Redesigned a year ago, the 2015 Chevrolet Impala builds on the attributes that made it one of the most acclaimed new cars of 2014 – including being named the Cars.com Best Car of 2014 and one of Kelley Blue Book’s 12 Best Family Cars for 2014.
The Impala Blackout concept builds on the car’s aggressive, acclaimed styling with blacked-out cues that lend it a sinister attitude – all accomplished with paint and accessories available from Chevrolet. The simple-yet-effective formula includes: Chevrolet Accessories black grille surround, rear spoiler, painted mirror caps and 19-inch aluminum wheels.
The all-black, leather-trimmed interior features custom trim plates with a wire mesh pattern, along with Chevrolet Accessories stainless steel sills – with the Impala logo – and a sport pedal kit. The Impala Blackout also rocks with the production model’s available 11-speaker Bose® Centerpoint® Surround Sound System, which connects to the Chevrolet MyLink system via an eight-inch-diagonal color touch screen.
The Impala’s available 3.6L V-6 engine, rated at 305 horsepower (227 kW) and 264 lb-ft of torque (358 Nm), powers the Blackout concept. It is the segment’s most powerful naturally aspirated V-6 engine.
Cruze RS Plus concept
Cruze is the cornerstone of Chevrolet’s North American small-car lineup, which is attracting a greater share of the market and more young, first-time customers visiting Chevy showrooms. It is also Chevrolet’s best-selling car around the world, with more than 3 million units sold globally since its launch in mid-2010.
The 2015 Chevrolet Cruze in North America receives revised exterior styling, enhanced interior convenience and greater connectivity – including new Text Message Alerts, Apple Siri integration and OnStar 4G LTE with available built-in Wi-Fi hotspot.
An available RS package includes unique fascias, rocker moldings, rear spoiler and fog lamps, while an uplevel instrument cluster includes chrome accent rings in place of the standard silver finish, and opaque cluster bezels that allow the cluster’s ice blue backlighting to shine through for a sporty nighttime appearance.
The Cruze RS Plus concept accentuates the distinctive, upscale styling cues of the 2015 Cruze RS with a custom Wildfire Metallic exterior, along with unique lower body moldings and a custom rear spoiler. A twin-stripe package in matte black is available from Chevrolet Accessories.
Inside, the Jet Black interior shines brighter with a Chevrolet Accessories ambient lighting kit and illuminated door sills. It also features a sport pedal kit and a Kicker subwoofer and amplifier kit.
Under the hood, the concept’s aggressive styling is matched with a performance-enhancing stage kit from Chevrolet Performance, as well as a concept fresh-air intake system for the 1.4L turbo engine.
A 2014 Chevy SS painted red and silver will act as the pace car for the NASCAR race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 27. The race is called the “Crown Royal Presents the John Wayne Walding 400 at the Brickyard Powered by BigMachineRecords.com” - probably the longest name of a race in the world…
While not all reviewers working for Consumer Reports are as good as explaining themselves as others, the point of this Chevrolet SS review does go across: it’s a four-door Corvette-sleeper…
The Chevrolet SS will get important updates for the 2015 model year, including a six speed manual transmission and magnetic ride control suspension technology.
In the video-review of the 2014 Chevrolet SS from The Smoking Tire that we posted last night, Matt Farah expressed the opinion that, to fix the V8-powered sports saloon's main weakness, the lack of (styling) attitude, you need to get it in black and place some more aggressive wheels and rubber on all four corners.
In your opinion, what's the biggest complaint about GM's new 2014 Chevrolet SS, and to some extent, its Holden Commodore brethren? If you ask Matt Farah from The Smoking Tire, it’s the lack of pizazz in the styling department – he says "it looks exactly like a Malibu". I wouldn't fully agree on the last statement, but I think he's right overall.
Hennessey Performance, one of the biggest engine-tuning names on this side of the pond, has dropped three videos of its most recent creations, including the 2014 Chevrolet SS HPE600, the Corvette C7 HPE700 Twin Turbo and the Lexus LX570 HPE500.
There are so many Chevrolet concepts heading to the Las Vegas Strip this week for the SEMA motor show that GM has opted to issue separate releases depending on the category they belong to. Today and following the announcements on Chevy's truck and passenger car studies, the bow and tie brand is affording us a first look at its sports and performance models.
Naturally, the spotlight is on the new 2014 Corvette Stingray that will be represented by three editions, starting with the 460hp Corvette Stingray Gran Turismo concept built to commemorate the game's 15th anniversary.
There are many reasons for which imported cars (especially luxury models) are very expensive in Australia: it’s a remote country with a relatively small automobile market, it drives on the left side of the road and it has high import duties.
All these factors contribute to surreal prices. Take the Mercedes CLA45 AMG for example: it costs AU$86,900 (US$82,165) in Australia, compared to US$48,355 in the United States.
Do you miss the Pontiac G8 and can't find a decent used example? GM has you covered as it has re-introduced the revised version of the Holden Commodore-based sports sedan in the States in the guise of the new 2014 Chevrolet SS, pricing of which was announced today before it goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2013.
Available exclusively in the United States (sorry Canada) with a 6.2-liter V8 paired to a 6-speed automatic (sorry manual gearbox fans), the SS carries an MSRP of $44,470, including a $995 destination charge, which makes it cheaper than a similarly powered BMW 5-Series model, but on the same level as the smaller and less powerful 300hp 335i sedan ($44,075 with destination).
The 2014 Chevrolet SS is a rear-wheel-drive performance sedan that promises to be the car the brand’s fans have long been waiting for. Whether or not it will live up to the hype, remains to be seen. Based on the Holden VF Commodore, the SS brings back to life the rear-wheel-drive V8-powered Chevrolet sedan that was so popular in the United States in the past.
When Josh and I were exchanging thoughts about our 'Future Car' rendering of the 2014 Chevrolet SS last December, we decided to go with a ZL1-like version instead of the regular model, which we both saw as a potential addition to the range.
Once again, Josh performed his magic and correctly predicted the shape and styling details of the base SS and therefore, the Holden Commodore SS V as well, decorating the end result with all those special features one expects from a Z series Chevy, including a ground effects kit, different bumper, honeycomb grille inserts and a bulging hood scoop – just like on the Camaro ZL1 and Corvette ZR1.
For sure, there are plenty of sporty flavored, rear-wheel drive sedans in the market, but the first two cars that come to mind as direct competitors to the new 2014 Chevrolet SS are without question, the 2013 Dodge Charger and the 2013 Chrysler 300.
General Motors won't be releasing prices for its bow-tie-badged Holden Commodore SS V until later this year, though, we anticipate to the SS to carry a similar price tag to its Chrysler Group challengers in the non-luxury, rear-wheel drive performance sedan category.
Chevrolet's highly anticipated re-entry in the rear-wheel drive, V8-powered sedan segment after an absence of nearly two decades, the new 2014 SS, was introduced this past Saturday at the Daytona International Speedway alongside the bow-tie brand's NASCAR competitor, which borrows the name, but not much else from the production model.
