Honda has issued a worldwide recall for 2.26 million vehicles, 1.5 million of which were sold in the US. The recall concerns certain 2005-2010MY Accords, 2007-2010MY CR-V SUVs and 2005-2008 Element crossovers, all equipped with four-cylinder engines and an automatic transmission.

The problem lies in the automatic transmission software, which can cause damage to the gearbox’s secondary shaft if the driver quickly changes between Reverse, Neutral and Drive.

“If the bearing is damaged in this unusual scenario, it can cause the engine to stall or lead to difficulty engaging the parking gear,” Honda said in a statement, adding that no injuries or deaths have occurred due to the malfunction.

The solution is a software update that slows the transition between gears thus reducing the possibility of damage.

Starting August 31, Honda will notify owners of the affected vehicles to have the transmission control software updated by its dealers free of charge.
