With an MSRP of around $250,000, the most affordable model in Rolls-Royce’s lineup, the Ghost, costs about four times as much as the top (non-M) BMW 5-Series in the States, the 550i (MSRP: $62,000).

Still, that doesn’t mean you won’t find common parts in these two models, and not only, as the BMW Group’s latest recall proves.

In two separate documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) on the same day, BMW and Rolls-Royce state the same thing: the circuit board for the electric auxiliary water pump can overheat and this could lead to a smoldering of the pump or an engine compartment or vehicle fire.

The recall covers 69 examples of the 2011 Rolls Royce Ghost and 2,846 BMW models equipped with 8- or 12-cylinder turbocharged engines including the 2011 5-Series sedan, 2011 5-Series Gran Turismo, 2012 6-Series Convertible, 2012 7-Series, 2012 X5 and 2012 X6.

Both brands said they will notify owners before the end of the month and dealers will replace the pump for free.
