The very first series-production example of the 2013 SRT Viper GTS was auctioned for $300,000 (about €240,000) at the Barrett-Jackson Orange County event this past weekend in a sale where all proceeds will benefit the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer.

The car displayed at the Barrett-Jackson event in California, however, was a pre-production model, as the Chrysler Group has not yet begun building the new Viper for consumers at its Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit.

The new generation of the Viper was unveiled at the 2012 New York Auto Show in April and will go on sale in the States later this year.

There will be two trims available, the basic Viper and the higher-spec Viper GTS, with both models powered by an all-aluminum, 8.4-liter V10 engine that delivers an estimated 640 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque.
