Watching this video of some 100 examples of the BMW Z1 gather at the company’s headquarters in Munich earlier in June to celebrate the sports car’s 25th anniversary, one can only admire the timeless styling and shape of the Bavarian brand’s first ever production Z model.

The Z1 made its world premiere at the 1987 Frankfurt Motor Show, sharing the limelight with BMW’s first ever 3-Series Touring model based on the E30, and the 750i powered by Germany’s first post-war 12-cylinder engine.

Developed by the BMW Technik GmbH division, the Z1 was also the company’s first BMW roadster in 30 years.

It fused readily available parts from the 325i E30 including interior components and the 168hp (171PS) 2.5-liter straight-six engine with brand new and innovative solutions for the time like the self-supporting monocoque construction made up of individual sheet-steel parts that constituted the car’s backbone, retractable doors and a multi-link design for the rear suspension.

BMW is said to have delivered around 8,000 cars from March 1989 when the Z1 went on sale until production stopped in June of 1991.
