The countdown for the unveiling of the all-important seventh generation of the Volkswagen Golf officially started this week with a media presentation in Germany where the automaker outlined the most important features of the compact model.

While we’ve already reported on the highlights of the Golf Mk7, we now have several high-resolution photos that were released during the presentation and which include a teaser sketch of the car (unfortunately still) under covers, its new MQB platform / body structure and some images from VW’s factory that will produce the car.

We also discovered a video on YouTube with some additional screen shots including one that shows all seven generations of the Golf with bullet points emphasizing the most important new features introduced by each model.

For the new Golf Mk7, which will likely go on sales in the States next year as a 2014 model, these include the “Multicollision Brake”, “Speed Limited”, “Front transverse diff. lock” and “Progressive steering”, just to mention a few.

You can check out our previous post for a more detailed look at the Golf VII, but to sum up, the new model will be up to 100kg / 220 lbs lighter than its predecessor, even though it has grown in size and offers more space for both passengers and their luggage, while it will also get a new generation of engines – at least in Europe.

The new Golf will be shown during a special event in Berlin on September 4 with its public premiere to follow at the end of the same month at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. European sales will start in November and in the rest of the world, next year.
