Close to 2,500 owners of certain model year 2012-2013 Beetle vehicles manufactured from February 2012, through August 2012, and equipped with leather sport seats, will be receiving a recall letter from Volkswagen.

According to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in these models, if for whatever reason the front passenger seat gets wet, the occupant control module may not detect the presence of a child restraint installed in the seat.

The safety agency said that if that were to happen in the event of a crash, then a child secured in the child seat would be at an increased risk for serious injury as the front airbag would not shut off and deploy.

The German automaker told NHTSA that it will replace the control modules free of charge, but did not provide a notification schedule for the recall.
