The first official pictures of Honda’s new Detroit auto show-bound Urban SUV concept hit the web today showing the Japanese carmaker’s study from two different angles.

Honda hasn’t released a lot of information on the Urban Concept other than saying that it is “a global concept model combining a sporty and dynamic SUV profile with a spacious, functional interior.”

Last fall, however, Honda’s president Takanobu Ito revealed that the carmaker is developing a small SUV based on the next Fit/Jazz subcompact with the intent to have it in showrooms around the world by 2015. All intel points to the Urban being this model.

The Urban’s primary rivals will be the Buick Encore and Nissan Juke in North America, and a multitude of sub-compact SUVs in other markets such as the newly presented Peugeot 2008, Renault Captur, Opel / Vauxhall Mokka and Chevrolet Trax in Europe.

Engine options will be shared with the next generation of the Jazz and will include diesel units in select markets.
