There are quite a few documented cases of people taking every-day vehicles and turning them into pick-up trucks, or utes, as they are called in Australia where they have just done it again, this time with a first-gen BMW X5 SUV.

While some of the similar projects we’ve seen varied in terms of quality of the finished product, I think this X5, which was done by a BMW dealership from Queensland, is one of the better ones I’ve seen.

It’s even got a desirable diesel engine, which makes hauling heavy payloads a breeze, and all-wheel drive, though, as we all know the Bavarian SUV was not designed to do off-road.

It also looks pretty cool, and while you can just see the outline of the rear doors, the X5’s body shape bodes well with being turned into the shape of the classic American (or Australian) workhorse. In addition, with the ~400 Nm/of torque from the 3.0-liter diesel, it should genuinely be good at moving the heaviest of belongings from one spot to another.

Scroll down and check out the (sadly) low-res photo gallery. Also, if you have photos of pick-up conversions, do upload them using the built-in feature offered.
