The funny thing with cars that you may have dismissed for any number of reasons when they were parked spanking-new in dealership lots, and which could range from their design to their engineering and cost, is that there’s always the possibility you may find them interesting enough to collect after few decades have passed by.
The even bigger irony is that sometimes, it’s precisely those quirky characteristics and features, which would have once deterred you to buy one new, that make you want one as a used collectors model…
For Carscoops reader Ervin Mezey, who you may remember from our Buick Reatta story last year, there’s nothing better than his drop-top ride, a Buick Reatta. Mezey, an active member of the Reatta Division of the Buick Club of America, helped get owners of said convertible model together for their second-ever annual meeting on the sidelines of the All GM Car Show held in Van Nuys, California this past Sunday.
Here’s what Mezey told us about the Reatta meeting:
“The 2nd annual Reatta Rally was held last Sunday, June 23rd within the All GM Car Show at Woodley Park in Van Nuys, CA. 12 Buick Reattas from all 1988-1991 model years were represented at the show (with 4 others in the parking lot not pictured).
There were 21,751 Reattas produced between 1988-1991. Of the 2,437 Reatta convertibles made in 1990-1991, of note were two 1990 silver exterior/slate gray interior convertibles on display (only 60 were produced in this color). Also, an even rarer 1990 Reatta convertible in Gunmetal gray (1 of 37 made) was on display.
Reatta owners from as far away as Seattle specifically drove down to the Reatta Rally. Each attendee received gifts (swag…Reatta porn) including a limited run/rare 1/24 scale model of a red Reatta coupe and a two sided Reatta key chain (one side displaying a red 1990 coupe and the other side a 1990 red convertible). Both these items were distributed by Buick to their dealerships to present to customers when finalizing a Reatta purchase.
While I happily sponsored the Reatta Rally, the local Los Angeles chapter of the BCA (Buick Club of America) was very helpful and supportive. In all, approximately 500 GM cars from past and present were on display at the All GM Car Show (which was a huge success). …and of course the Reatta Rally was one of the highlights of the show.”
