I’m pretty sure there is no driver out there that wasn’t surprised at least once by a vehicle he or she didn’t see in the car’s rearview mirrors. It’s called a blind spot and every mirror has it. This is why automakers have begun offering systems that alert drivers when a vehicle is in the blind spot.

One such system is VW’s Side Assist, which informs the driver when a vehicle is in the driver’s blind spot by turning on a light in the exterior mirror on the side in question. Two radar systems at the rear scan the areas up to around 50 meters behind the vehicle and in the blind spots to the sides.

Sounds pretty tedious, but VW has found a funny way to advertise this, by showing a man shaving in front of a mirror. All of a sudden, a bearded man in a leather jacket appears behind him, with the message “Beware of the biker that comes from nowhere” appearing on the screen. Scroll down to watch the commercial.
