Rumors regarding the possible transformation of the next Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution into a hybrid are not new, yet what Autocar has just reported does seem to be fresh. The British publication says that not only will the car gets part of its power from electric motors, but also that there will be plenty of it to go around, and have thrown out a possible value of 500 horses.

They argue that this would put it up against the Nissan GT-R, as well as an entire new set of faster rivals, and make room for more models to sit underneath it in the range.

Apparently, everything hinges on the level of acceptance Mitsubishi’s new plug-in hybrid tech manages to achieve. Currently only available on the new Outlander, which has limited availability, next it will be used in the all-new Lancer which is being readied for launch, as well as a new hybrid EVO.

Now while at first this may sound a bit odd, there is a lot of promise buried deep inside the idea somewhere. A new EVO that gets a powerful petrol engine and the instant torque of electric motors, sent to all four wheels in the classic manner we’ve been used to, really sounds like something worth waiting for.
