Metaphorically speaking, when someone “gets the shaft”, it means they are not being treated in a fair way, but in the case of 24-year old Supersport Seat Leon Supercopa driver Jimmy Adriaenssens, the racer literally received a BMW M3’s shaft (with the help of a Porsche 911) during the recent Supercar Challenge race of the Gamma Racing Day 2013.

Adriaenssens’ racing team explains:

“During the first Supercar Challenge race of the Gamma Racing Day 2013, Supersport Seat Leon Supercopa driver Jimmy Adriaenssens had a drive shaft of BMW M3 launched into his wind screen. The drive shaft was lying on the ground and the Porsche in front of him threw the drive shaft in the air at 225 kph [140mph]. Luckily the drive shaft didn’t enter the car because the impact would have been into the driver’s seat… Jimmy Adriaenssens, 24 years old, racing for over 8 year got out of the incident unharmed and continued his race.”

Ironically, Adriaenssens encountered another problem with a shaft during the same race, this time, from his own car, as “his drive shaft failed in the end of the race and he had to fulfill the race on only one driveshaft.”
