Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-In Hybrid Makes Frankuft Debut, Needs Just 3 L/100KM

The year 2013 has been all about cool hybrids, ones you couldn’t possibly say no to, regardless of your usual automotive preferences. For instance, even if you’re not that much into BMWs, the i8 sounds (and looks) very appealing, even from an enthusiast’s point of view, and it’s one of many hybrid-electrics that really stirs up desire.

There’s also a slew of hybrids that are more oriented towards economy, even though the BMW is too, but to a lesser extenet as it’s also meant to be fun, and they promise to sacrifice some performance in the name of pure efficiency.

The Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-In hybrid sits right in the middle – it’s not overly sporty, but then again its figures suggest it’s no slouch either. It pairs a 328 hp 3.0-liter turbo V6 with a 107 hp electric motor, so there’s plenty of power, plus it promises to return a claimed 3.0 l/100km, or 94 mpg UK / 78.4 mpg US. Top speed is 250 km/h (155 mph) and the benchmark sprint is dealt with in 5.5 seconds, so it’s as quick as some sports cars…

Moreover, unlike the previous S-Class hybrids, this one is a plug-in and can therefore be charged separately, and then driven on battery power alone for around 30 km (19 miles). It also benefits from the fact that it’s the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class, a car that promises to move the class goal posts yet again in its class, so its appeal is not only based on the green credentials it offers, but it’s certainly boosted by them.

The S500 PHEV just made its official debut at the Frankfurt motor show, and it’s expected to go on sale sometime next year.
