The thing with big, luxury Mercedes-Benz coupes is that they feel, look and are priced for people that either have entered or are approaching their golden years. Mercedes is attempting to change that perception (sans the part about the price) with the CL’s replacement previewed by the elegantly sporty S-Class Coupe Concept in Frankfurt.
Don’t get us wrong; the bulk of sales of the beautifully sculpted S-Class Coupe will likely continue to come from the same affluent age group with some younger newcomers entering the mix, but as at least they’ll be driving something that will make them feel younger, if you know what we mean.
One thing this author doesn’t care much about is the instrument panel, which looks as if the designers rested two iPad tablets on the dashboard to give it some gadget-cred.
Overall, I’d say a nice effort from Mercedes, which continues to evolve its design language, leaving the unmemorable 1990s and 2000s behind for good.
