Europe and North America are the most common places / continents for prototype sightings from regional automakers, but the Republic of South Africa is also a hot spot (we’ve even spied a Pagani there back in 2010).

These photos were kindly forwarded to us by Carscoops’ reader Thulani who was fast enough to snap a few shots of a covered up Mercedes-Benz GT AMG (also referred to as the SLC) in the city of Nelspruit in northeastern South Africa, before it ran away.

It’s Mercedes’ upcoming Jaguar F-type R Coupe, Porsche 911 Turbo, and Audi R8 challenger, and isn’t meant to be a direct replacement for the more exotic and pricier SLS AMG.

Power will come from a newly developed 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, believed to be offered in more than one output levels.

Mercedes boss Dieter Zetsche recently confirmed the debut of the new car for this year stating, “We also have plans for a completely new vehicle in the sports segment as well. I don’t want to give out much now, but it will be an all-new Mercedes”.
