Earlier today, we gave you a first glance at Mercedes upcoming Porsche 911 challenger with a batch of leaked interior photos, and now, we have the official commentary as well as higher resolution imagery from Benz, which also confirmed the new sport car’s name: Mercedes-AMG GT.

The Germans pointed out that the AMG GT will compete in a different category and carry a more reasonable sticker price than the SLS AMG stating that the car “is destined for a new segment – turning the dream of the authentic Mercedes-AMG sports car into reality”.

A piece of advice here– don’t let Mercedes’ promising words get your hopes up too high, as while it may not cost as much as the SLS AMG that started from around $200k, you’re still looking at a price tag well over $100k.

“The new Mercedes-AMG GT shows that we will be positioning AMG more vehemently and aggressively than to date as a dynamic sports car brand,” commented Mercedes AMG boss Tobias Moers.

“The technological substance of the Mercedes-AMG GT underscores our high aspirations with regard to driving dynamics, agility and sportiness. Following the global success of the SLS AMG, the new GT is the second sports car developed fully independently by Mercedes-AMG. An initial exclusive look at the design of the interior shows what is in store for our customers: a GT sports car in its purest form,” added Moers.

As for the interior, Mercedes said that the design “embodies emotion and sensuality” and is a further development of the central “aviation design” found in the brand’s sports car range. One thing that escaped our attention before is the form of the AMG DRIVE UNIT controls on the lower center console that are “arranged like eight cylinders in a V layout”. And yes, the AMG GT will feature a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine.

The world premiere of the car will take place later this year, possibly at the Paris Motor Show in October.
