While drivers still occasionally perish in modern motorsport, they have to either be very unlucky or be going extremely fast with the kind of rigidity really all modern racers have. I mean, this Formula Renault 3.5 crash from a race around the fast Monza track in Italy would have had you fearing the worse more than a decade ago, doubting that either of the two drivers would be able to clamber out unscathed.

But that’s exactly what both did.

Jazeman Jaafar (from Malaysia) and Marco Sørensen (from Denmark) were the two involved; Jaafar is the one whose car ends up facing the other way round, while Sørensen is the one who goes up into the air and into the pit lane wall.

You’ve got to hand it to these race car designers and engineers when it comes to state of the art carbon tubs – this is proof that even in the lower leagues of racing, safety is still very high.
